For Immediate Release:
TECHNICAL SERVICES CREATES REMOTE RECORDING
AND MARKING SOLUTION BASED ON LAIRD’S CAPDIV DIRECT DV RECORDER
(Mount Marion, NY) May 8, 2003 -- Laird Telemedia today
announced that Lakeside, Calif.-based systems integrator Technical Services has implemented
the capdiv Direct DV Recorder in a system that allows operators to live-switch digital
video (DV) from multiple cameras for capture in an edit-ready format, and mark video
while recording via wireless remote control.
“ Our remote record and marking system frees producers and directors from the console by giving
them a wireless control capable of marking specific spots within the video as it is being captured,” explained
Michael Bell, president and CEO of Technical Services. “Users simply set the system to record,
and mark specific cuts and locations while moving around the set. Later, during editing, those cue marks
are already located in the timelines. With this capability, users can use the capdiv to record the whole
thing.”
Recently honored with an NAB Award for Innovation in Media (AIM) and named overall “Editors’ Choice” winner
within the content creation category, Laird’s capdiv Direct DV Recorder is a tapeless, disk-based
capture and playback deck designed to shorten the lengthy DV capture process and to make video clips
instantly accessible to NLE systems for post production purposes. capdiv records edit-ready clips directly
to its integrated hard drive from any DV camcorder as footage is being shot. It then can serve as a
hard disk drive or transfer captured media at four times faster than real time via FireWire® (IEEE 1394)
to NLE systems for editing as a file.
“ In the short time that our capdiv has been on the market, we’ve seen it incorporated in
a variety of applications that increase the efficiency of broadcast and film production,” said
Vin Bruno, Laird Telemedia vice president. “As we continue development of new solutions for the
DV market, it’s exciting to see how companies like Technical Services draw on our products’ unique
capabilities to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving digital production environment.”
Laird Telemedia’s advanced, proprietary DV technologies for the broadcast and recording industries
are available from Laird’s worldwide network of professional distributors. For a full list of
available systems, visit www.lairdtelemedia.com.

announced that its miniature capdiv Direct DV Recorder, designed for videography, ENG,
EFP, and field acquisition applications, is now shipping. Based on Laird’s own
hard-drive record and playback technology, the highly portable digital IEEE-1394 (FireWire®)
tapeless recorder/player streamlines recording and transfer processes with instant

DV content into an extended AVI format that can be imported into most NLE systems. NLEs configured
with Final Cut Pro® or Avid Xpress® DV will recognize the capdiv Direct DV Recorder as an
external hard drive. As a result, the video content is available instantly and ready for editing

NANCY GLASS CHOOSES LAIRD’S
DVora™ EDITING SYSTEMS FOR DISCOVERY AND HGTV PRODUCTION
(Mount Marion, NY) February 24, 2003 -- Laird Telemedia today
announced that Nancy Glass Productions, a Philadelphia-based television production
company, has purchased three of Laird’s DVora™ Media Engines for rough-cut
editing during full production of seven prime time shows for the Home and Garden
TV (HGTV) and Discovery networks.
“Our DVora™ DV editing systems provide the speed and functionality we need with much greater
economy than competing systems,” said Rob Melick, director of operations at Nancy Glass Productions. “Rather
than outsource editing work, as we have in the past, we can keep the entire production process in-house,
using our own editing staff. This capability has given us greater flexibility in turning out projects
quickly and at a lower cost. Not only have we saved money, but we’ve also been able to expand our
company.”
The Laird DVora™ is an advanced PC media engine, designed specifically for digital video
and audio applications. Unlike office PCs that have been modified for video editing, the Laird
DVora™ has many specific features, such as integrated direct-to-digital inputs and outputs,
that offer higher picture quality and more efficient processing of images and audio.
Each of the seven shows in production at Nancy Glass Productions includes 60 episodes over the
course of the season. The company has been completing rough-cut editing with its DVora™ systems
since the beginning of 2003, when the new media engines from Laird Telemedia were installed. The
Pentium IV-based, 2.4-GHZ DVora™ mid-tower NLE systems are configured to run Avid Xpress
3.5 in conjunction with an Avid Unity server.
“Our editors work on the DVora™ systems all day, and we’ve been really impressed by
their bang for the buck,” adds Melick. “They’re easy to use, and they’ve proved
to be as fast as our more-expensive editing systems.”
Systems in Laird Telemedia’s line of DVora™ turnkey edit solutions are available in
endless configuration options from Laird’s worldwide network of professional distributors.

LAIRD PROFESSIONAL DVORA NLE SYSTEM
Built like a battleship, with a variety of weapons - by Charlie White
(Mount Marion, NY) January 23, 2003 -- If you use
Betacam SP as an acquisition format, but still want all the benefits
of working with DV, Laird Telemedia has created DVora, a box that's built like
a battleship, and can input and output a variety of analog formats, along with
DV. And, engineers will be happy with the way DVora plays along with all the
rest of the equipment in a pro broadcast environment.
We took a look at the $7499 DVora and liked what we saw. Sure, that $7499 sounds like a lot,
but if you're working within a broadcast environment, your bean counters won't mind shelling
out the extra cash for the capability of a horizontally stable RS170A SCH locked-signal output,
important because it's compliant with SMPTE/EBU broadcast standards. In layman's terms, that
means that you could play your timeline directly to air, and the video would look just as stable
as everything else your station airs. DV signals have gotten somewhat of a bad reputation in
the broadcast world, because when you view them on a waveform monitor or vector scope, they're
oftentimes not as stable as most engineers would like. So, with the processing hardware in the
DVora, when you put a shaky signal into it, it comes out rock-solid. That's what you're paying
extra for, and it's an important feature if you're planning to broadcast DV footage. You're also
paying for that Avid Xpress DV software, which at $1500 isn't cheap, either. Overall, the $7499
isn't too bad of a value, and one that I'm sure most broadcast establishments can handle.
In our test unit, in addition to the Intel P4 2GHz computer, there's a breakout box (pictured
at left) that lets you connect balanced XLR audio inputs and outputs (you know, the ones with
the three prongs), BNC cables for Betacam SP component input and output, composite inputs/outputs
and S-Video in and out as well. The computer's heavy, battleship gray steel case has considerable
heft to it, and inspires confidence with its blinking lights and anachronistic knobs, buttons
and a toggle switch.
Continuing the pro theme with this unit is Xpress DV 3.5, which we've reviewed in its version
3 and 3.5 -- software that gives you nearly the same benefits of Avid's top-end editing systems.
The good news with this setup is that Avid software is sometimes finicky about which hardware
with which it will play, and with the DVora, you can be sure it'll be ready to spring into action
right out of the box. And that's just what it did here at the Midwest Test Facility. After spending
a few minutes getting everything set up, we were capturing video from both analog and DV sources
pronto. Ahh, the benefits of a turnkey system -- it's a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say.
If you're not a big Avid fan, Laird won't disappoint you, either, because the company also offers
the DVora with editing hardware from Canopus, Matrox, and Pinnacle, and also lets you pick either
a single- and dual-Pentium box. Given that, I wonder why Laird sent us a 2.0GHz box with 512
MB of RAM for our testing. Since Xpress DV scales its speed and number of real time effects with
the host processor on which it is running, I would think Laird would have sent us the fastest
machine it could find for this review. 2GHz is relatively slow in today's fast-paced processor
market, where, at this writing, the fastest P4 runs at 3.06 GHz and enjoys the benefits of hyperthreading,
with its superior speed that makes a significant difference -- we've seen it with our own eyes.
I say, if you're going to supply a turnkey system, Laird, stoke it with ton of RAM -- that's
cheap -- and the fastest proc on the planet. After all, video editing is one of the few applications
where speed is at the top of the list of important things.
On the front of the case are two pushbuttons that let you choose between DV I/O and analog I/O,
and another button that lets you choose between 32K and 48K audio encoding. Then there's a couple
of good old VU meters to monitor your analog audio input and output, along with a knob to adjust
the level of each channel. Many engineer-types, fed up with mousing around a computer interface,
will welcome these touches. They'll also like the nicely designed breakout box, which is rack-mountable
and is one rack-unit (RU) tall.
This is obviously a professional setup. But it's too noisy. If you actually wanted to use these
knobs to adjust your audio levels, you'd need to be sitting right beside this computer as you
work all day long. And then, all that noise might interfere with your ability to hear the quiet
passages and nuance of your audio tracks. With its six cooling fans, the computer makes too much
noise to live with, in my opinion. Better to just place this big bertha back in the rack room
with the breakout box, and keep yourself in your edit suite with some long cables for your mouse,
keyboard and monitors, putting some walls or floors between you and the constant whoosh of the
multiple fans.
So if you have multiple input sources to edit, and also need to output to various sources, and
you need it to all possess rock-solid video quality that can pass muster with even the most persnickety
engineer, the DVora is a good choice. Also coming in handy in our testing was the way the system
just worked right out of the box. I liked the DVora, with its excellent design and stellar broadcast
specs. So will your engineering team.

LAIRD CAPDIVATES
WITH NEW MINIATURE DIRECT DV RECORDER
The capdiv Direct DV Recorder streamlines recording and
transfer processes with instant access to recorded material for
editing and post-production
(Mount Marion, NY) December 5, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia today announced the launch of its new, miniature
capdiv Direct DV Recorder, a highly portable digital IEEE-1394
(FireWire®) tapeless recorder/player based on Laird’s
proprietary hard-drive record and playback technology. Designed
for videography, ENG, EFP, and field acquisition, the capdiv Direct
DV Recorder greatly reduces the time and cost of recording edit-ready
clips directly to a hard-disk drive (HDD) from DV camcorders during
field shooting.
“capdiv eliminates the lengthy video capture process by
allowing the NLE system to access clips instantly for post-production,”
said Laird Vice President Vin Bruno. “NLE systems treat
capdiv as another hard drive, providing drag-and-drop file management
to give operators all the power, speed, and efficiency of hard-drive
technology without the need for re-digitizing or transferring
recorded media.”
The capdiv Direct DV Recorder’s preformatted internal hard-disk
drive enables the system to operate as a VTR — complete
with front-panel controls for record, play, and pause —
or to function as an HDD.
When serving as a VTR, the capdiv can accept, “start”
and “stop” record commands automatically from the
camera trigger/record button of any DV camcorder. capdiv relies
on a proprietary file scheme incorporating 99 sequentially numbered
capdiv files (CF). During shooting, video is recorded as raw DV
content into a pre-selected CF, to which a virtually unlimited
number of clips can be appended. The operator uses a front-panel
pushbutton to insert cue marks while shooting, and as a result,
marked material may be searched quickly and accessed without delay.
When switched into HDD mode, the new DV recorder performs an instant
conversion of raw DV content into an extended AVI format that
can be imported into most NLE systems. NLEs configured with Final
Cut Pro® or Avid Xpress® DV will recognize the capdiv
Direct DV Recorder as an external hard drive. As a result, the
video content is available instantly and ready for editing right
away. Operators also may use the system for archiving purposes,
recording to both tape and HDD simultaneously.
The capdiv Direct DV Recorder is powered by any 12-V DC power
source, including battery belts, NiCad packs, and 12-V wall packs.
A belt clip mounted on the capdiv housing – which measures
just 1.75 in. by 4.0 in. by 4.75 in. – offers
easy slip-on utility. The system weighs only 13 ounces.
The capdiv is a full turnkey DV capture system, requiring no additional
purchase. capdiv is supplied with a six-hour rechargeable beltpack
battery, NP-1 adapter, AC power supply, and battery charger. Laird
Telemedia products, including the capdiv Direct DV Recorder announced
today, are available from a worldwide network of professional
distributors.

LAIRD DVORA™ TURNKEY
EDIT SYSTEMS INSTALLED AT ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY EDIT
LAB
DVora™ Media Engines and Avid Unity LANshare
system provide students with high-quality editing software
and centralized, easy-to-access media storage
(Mount Marion, NY) October 10, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia today announced that St. John’s University
has installed eight DVora™ digital video Media Engine
PCs and an Avid Unity LANshare system in the university’s
dedicated edit lab. Working in conjunction with New York City-based
systems integrator Virtual Media, the university built an
eight-seat linked system in which the Unity system acts as
a domain server to allow students to log in and access, edit,
and store material while working at any networked editing
system.
“Hands-on teaching using contemporary equipment is the
focus at St. John’s,” said Anthony Costa, engineer
for the Instructional Television Center at the College of
Professional Studies at St. John’s University. “Editing
concepts are always the same, but the tools being used in
the field for professional editing applications change. Today,
they’re all modeled after Avid systems. Using Laird’s
Media Engines with Avid 3.5, our students have access to the
same high-quality hardware and software being used in the
real world.”
St. John’s students are using the university’s
DVora™ systems for editing classes, a field production
course, TV Club projects, and senior projects. All media files
are stored on the Avid Unity Server, enabling the instructor
to digitize media files onto a single server, from which students
then may copy and edit the files themselves. A distribution
rack built by Costa facilitates output of edit sessions from
any DVora™ system or DVR to a monitor or big screen
display for teaching and demonstration purposes.
“The combination of the DVora™ systems and the
Unity server provides a low-cost system with professional-grade
performance,” added Costa. “I’ve been able
to link all of our machines easily with a minimum of wiring
and extra components, and as a result the students have access
to all of our media management tools in a much more robust
editing environment.”
The DVora™ Media Engine configured with Avid Xpress
DV 3.5 is a fully integrated non-linear editing system that
combines an Intel-based PC with Component, Composite, S-VHS,
and Balanced Audio direct to digital I/Os. Laird’s DVora™
technology stabilizes the DV signal for broadcast applications.
Laird's proprietary circuit design delivers a horizontally
stable, true RS170A SCH locked signal. Stabilizing the DV
image makes the signal compatible to all SMPTE/EBU standards.

LAIRD’S DVORA™
SYSTEMS IMPLEMENTED AT ORAL ROBERTS UNIVERSITY MULTIMEDIA
INSTITUTE
Digital Resources’ installation of 20 custom
DVora™ turnkey edit systems from Laird provides students
in multimedia program with affordable AVID editing solution
(Mount Marion, NY) September 12, 2002 --
Laird Telemedia today announced that Oral Roberts
University in Tulsa, Okla., is implementing 20 DVora™
Media Engines configured with Avid Xpress 3.5 within the university’s
Multimedia Institute. Installed by Tulsa-based distributor
Digital Resources, the new systems from Laird offer the university’s
students an affordable editing tool that incorporates the
industry-standard Avid interface to provide professional-grade
performance.
“We chose to incorporate the DVora™ systems into the
institute’s computer lab because we wanted to give the
students access to a high-quality production tool that they
could utilize for their senior projects and in their work
beyond the university, after graduation,” said Roger
Bush, Associate Director of the Multimedia Institute at Oral
Roberts University. “We’d been using Adobe Premiere
up to this point, and we knew we wanted to make the jump to
the new DV Xpress editing system from Avid. Digital Resources
suggested Laird’s turnkey systems, and they bent over
backward for us to get the systems tested and installed successfully
in time for fall classes.”
Students who are accepted into the university’s multimedia
program do all of their core courses – including writing,
advanced audio, Web authoring, and television production –
during the junior year. Coursework involving production tools
like Avid Xpress provides an excellent foundation for students
in media communications, and the familiarity with a DV editing
tool also is an important part of a communications arts degree.
Because the new Laird editing hardware is included in the
registration fee for the university’s year-long editing
course, students walk away from the class with their own Laird
systems and the knowledge they need to create and complete
their own projects.
“We were able to work closely with both Laird and ORU
to install systems that offer students a new level of performance
in an affordable and reliable machine,” said Tim Bock,
President of Digital Resources. “We tested the DVora™
systems at our facility and installed them in a single day.
The next day the machines were up and running smoothly for
the first class of the semester. Everything went well.”
The DVora™ Media Engine loaded, tested and configured with
Avid Xpress DV 3.5 is a fully integrated non-linear editing
system that integrates an Intel-based PC with Component, Composite,
S-VHS, and Balanced Audio direct to digital I/Os. Laird’s
DVora™ technology stabilizes the DV signal for broadcast applications.
Laird's proprietary circuit design delivers a horizontally
stable, true RS170A SCH locked signal. Stabilizing the DV
image makes the signal compatible to all SMPTE/EBU standards.
“Avid Xpress DV 3.5 is rapidly becoming the editing
platform of choice within the academic community,” said
Vin Bruno, Vice President of Laird Telemedia. “Educators
have come to the realization that real-world motion picture
editing cannot be taught properly using appliance devices.
For educational institutions, smaller production companies,
and corporate video departments looking for quick turnaround
and high quality on a budget, Avid Xpress DV is a turnkey
system that provides a wide range of high-end features.”
Laird’s DVora™ PC-based computers have been designed
specifically for digital video applications. Unlike computers
that have been modified to run DV, the DVora™ has specific
direct-to-digital features that offer higher picture quality
and more efficient processing of images and audio. Laird’s
full line of broadcast-DV DVora™ PCs for Avid include
the Canopus DVStormSE+ System, Mid-Tower Intel Pentium IV
2.0-GHz System, Full-Tower Dual Intel Pentium IV 2.0-GHz Xeon
System, Rackmount Dual Intel Pentium IV 2.0-GHz Xeon System,
and Laptop on Mobile Intel Pentium IV 2.2-GHz System. Endless
configuration upgrades for storage, RAM processing speed,
monitors, and other components are available.

LAIRD ANNOUNCES NEW, COST-EFFECTIVE
THREE-SOURCE EDITING ROUTER
Laird is now shipping the latest addition to its LTM
Series of editing routers, providing efficient multi-source
switching for broadcast, training and educational markets.
(Mount Marion, NY) June 19, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia today announced the new cost-effective LTM-ER3
three-source editing router, the latest addition to the company's
family of specialized routers for non-linear editing applications.
Now shipping, the LTM-ER3 provides an inter-format solution
for multi-source switching applications in the broadcast, training,
and educational markets.
"Thanks to the LTM series' Flex Technology,
the days of multiple patch bays, separate routers and cable
confusion are over," said Laird Vice President Vin Bruno.
"These routers also save Avid®, Apple® and other
editors tons of time routing their source and record decks with
one-button control of their audio, video and RS-422."The
LTM-ER3 three-source editing router is a bidirectional 3 x 1
or 1 x 3 multi-format Flex Technology router with a >1-GHz
bandwidth for HDTV capability. The unit switches SDI, YUV, Y/C,
composite video, balanced audio and RS-422 for machine control.
The LTM-ER3 is NTSC/PAL compatible, and features a 110/220-VAC,
50/60-Hz auto-sensing power supply.
This versatile new tool builds on Laird's existing
series of editing routers, which also includes the LTM-ER2 and
LTM-ER4 editing routers which are true multi-format devices
that route component, composite, Y/C, and balanced audio, and
provide full RS-422 machine control. Both routers eliminate
the need for multiple patch bays and reduce cable clutter and
confusion. Ideal for Broadcast DV applications, the LTM-ER2
allows the editor to use two decks for both sourcing and recording,
serving as a 2 x 1 router to download to an NLE or as a 1 x
2 router for NLE uploads. Also offered is the LTM-ER2DX, an
IEEE1394 Firewire/SDI/SPDIF Digital Signal Expander Module for
the LTM-ER2.
The LTM-ER4 features direction control that enables
editors to use four decks for both sourcing and recording, serving
as a 1 x 4 router for NLE upload applications or a 4 x 1 router
to download from an NLE. Optional add-ons include the LTM-ER4
direct-dubbing module; a digital signal expander (FireWire,
SDI, SPDIF); and an NLE coupler that allows multiple NLEs to
share the same source and record decks. Laird Telemedia products,
including the new LTM-ER3, are available from a worldwide network
of professional distributors.

LAIRD LAUNCHES WORLD'S FIRST FIREWIRE
DISTRIBUTION AMPLIFIER FOR BROADCAST DV APPLICATIONS
LTM-DVDA5 recognizes five Firewire devices simultaneously
(Mount Marion, NY) June 5, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia announced today that it has successfully cloned
multiple Firewire (IEEE 1394) protocols to create the world's
first Firewire distribution amplifier for copying, distributing,
and replicating DV signals. The LTM-DVDA5 is a full-function,
two-input switchable x five-common-output Firewire DV distribution
amplifier designed to meet the highest performance specifications
using Laird's renowned Broadcast DV (BDV) circuitry.
"Until Laird's discovery, users were either at the mercy
of Firewire repeaters that only recognized one device at a time,
or daisy-chained devices that were plagued with initialization
problems," said Laird Vice President Vin Bruno. "The
LTM-DVDA5 can select from two input sources and output to five
IEEE 1394-compatible devices simultaneously, which streamlines
the overall productivity of your Broadcast DV application."
Using any Firewire DV source device, such as a DV camera, the
LTM-DVDA5 can provide five common signals to feed all compatible
devices, making BDV applications like DV dubbing possible without
complex computer controlled devices. The LTM-DVDA5 is the ideal
tool for making multiple NLE downloads or producing copies of
finished edited media, or for applications that require split
DV signal monitoring, DV duplication, DV mastering, or hard
drive cloning.
The LTM-DVDA5 is housed in a one-half RU cabinet and offers
a 110/220 switchable power supply for international usage. An
optional rack-mount kit is also available. In addition to the
new Firewire DA, Laird is also introducing long-length Firewire
cables in 75, 125 and 164-foot lengths - all based on the company's
new extended-distance technology. The cables are specially engineered
to reduce the attenuation and noise commonly associated with
long-length cables.

NAB 2002 HUGE SUCCESS FOR LAIRD TELEMEDIA
Laird Delivers Broadcast DV to the Broadcast Market
(Mount Marion, NY) April 11, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia, a pioneer in the enhancement of IEEE 1394
DV to a broadcast standard, enjoyed high praises for its product
introductions from their industry peers at the recently completed
NAB 2002, held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Laird engineers have developed
the world's first and only IEEE 1394 DV product line featuring
circuitry that provides horizontally stable RS170A SCH locked
DV signal output, compliant to SMPTE/EBU broadcast standards.
This strict adherence to the true broadcast specification earned
the respect and recommendations from fellow broadcast manufacturers
such as Avid, Apple, Hitachi, and Grass Valley Group. All of
these industry giants proudly used Laird DV products to exhibit
their own equipment at this NAB as well as other venues.
The National Association of Broadcasters is a full-service trade
association that promotes and protects the interests of radio
and television broadcasters in Washington and around the world.
NAB is the broadcaster's voice before Congress, federal agencies
and the Courts. Our spring convention, known simply as "NAB,"
and our annual NAB Radio Show are the finest broadcast-related
expositions in the world and welcome thousands of visitors each
year from the U.S. and abroad. For state-of-the art technology,
the brightest minds in the business and opportunities to network,
our conventions are unparalleled.
Laird Telemedia has a family of media converters that include
two bi-directional units, the LTM-5000 and the LTM-5500, as
well as a portable field unit, the LTM-FFP, for analog to digital
conversion only. The LTM-5000 and LTM-5500 both feature balanced
XLR audio in and out, VU metering, audio level controls, composite
and Y/C video to and from DV. The LTM-5500 also adds component
video in and out. The LTM-FFP converts balanced XLR audio, component,
Y/C, and composite video to DV. For monitoring purposes, the
LTM-FFP has composite video and unbalanced stereo out. All units
are NTSC/PAL and run on autosensing 110/220 volt power. The
LTM-FFP will also run off of a standard 12V battery pack. NP-1
battery adapter included. CE approved. Made in USA.
The DVora™ Media Engine integrates an Intel based broadcast PC
with Component, Composite, S-VHS, DV, and Balanced Audio (XLR)

LAIRD INTRODUCES NEW PC MEDIA ENGINE
The Broadcasters PC Is Here !
(Mount Marion, NY) April 7, 2002 -- Laird
Telemedia announced today the delivery of its new DVora™
PC media engine designed to maximize AVID Xpress DV 3 for professional
video editing. What makes the DVora™ so unique is its direct
to digital integrated analog to IEEE1394 capability as well
as its VU meters and 1RU steel breakout box with broadcast connectors.
Unlike office PCs that have been modified for video editing,
the DVora™ was designed from the ground up as an editing machine
with broadcast features. The all silver aluminum cabinet is
both cool looking and cool running as it acts as an entire heat
sink. Other features include the fastest Intel processors and
high speed drives for fast rendering of AVID Xpress DV 3 effects.
The DVora™ is manufactured by Laird Telemedia and is fully certified
by AVID. Vin Bruno, vice president of Laird, said the
DVora™ is becoming the broadcasters answer for speed and
interface requirements. Laird saw a need for a computer manufacturer
to build these machines as there are inherent problems with
modified after market PCs. Our dealers and customers want
a factory fresh hardware/software solution that is both certified
and supported by a 31 year old broadcast manufacturer.
The DVora™ Media Engine integrates an Intel based broadcast PC
with Component, Composite, S-Video, DV, and Balanced Audio (XLR)
I/Os. Laird DVora™ technology stabilizes the DV signal for broadcast
applications. Laird's proprietary circuit design delivers a
horizontally stable true RS170A SCH locked signal. Stabilizing
the DV image makes the signal compatible to all SMPTE/EBU standards.

EMMY AWARD WINNING KPHO-TV5 ROUTES WITH
LAIRD
Laird Provides NLE Switching Structure for CBS Affiliate
(Mount Marion, NY) September 27, 2001--Laird

Routers to KPHO-TV5, a CBS affiliate in Phoenix, Arizona. The

systems designed for routing all formats of video and balanced

John Cirina, TV Systems Engineer of KPHO-TV5 has designed a
state of the art news gathering edit operation using the Laird

to provide the core switching network for the news gathering
operation. John Cirina reported "The LTM-ER2 is
a wonderful design and with some simple modifications which
were easily made, they fit our engineering needs perfectly."
Besides being the first television station in Arizona, KPHO-TV5
is now one of the state's first digital broadcasters as well.
TV5 earned a record 14 Emmys in the 2001 Rocky Mountain Emmy
Award Competition. 2000 Rocky Mountain Emmy awards were brought
home by several members of TV5's news team. KPHO-TV5 News also

upload from an NLE. The LTM-ER2 ends the need for multiple
patch bays, confusing cable clutter and "what goes where"
questions. An optional add-on is available to further expand
the functionality of the LTM-ER2. The LTM-ER2DX
is an IEEE1394 Firewire/SDI/SPDIF Digital Signal Expander Module

LAIRD INTRODUCES THE WORLD'S MOST ADVANCED
HUM ELIMINATOR
Humguard 16 Channel Active Broadcast Sentry
(Mount Marion, NY) September 14, 2001--Laird
Telemedia introduces the LTM-HG16, 16-channel active
video and audio hum eliminator. The Laird LTM-HG16 represents
state-of-the-art video and audio hum and modal noise elimination.
Designed around Laird's proprietary OPTO-COUPLED DIFFERENTIAL
AMPLIFIER circuitry, the LTM-HG16 provides a complete
system for multi-channel hum elimination for both video and
audio. Eight composite channels of base band video can be processed
simultaneously, as well as eight balanced audio channels.
The LTM-HG16 is housed in a 2 RU enclosure designed to
provide ground/mode isolation from input to output. A specially
designed power supply offers isolation by use of dual secondaries
and ground lifting operations. Designed to work in any professional
environment where ground loop noise can cause serious problems,
the LTM-HG16 will guard against power mode phase shift
in buildings where power demand fluctuations causes grounding
noise. Used as a room-to-room coupler, the LTM-HG16 allows
equipment in those rooms to operate without the typical ground
difference loop noise, which can shut down a facility.
All operations are completely automatic and require absolutely
no adjustments or calibrations from the user. The LTM-HG16
also features buffered input/output line receiver audio circuitry
and line driver video and audio outputs to accommodate long
cable runs, and operates in NTSC or PAL. Complete specifications
can be found at www.lairdtelemedia.com.

APPLE WINS EMMY FOR FIREWIRE TECHNOLOGY
Laird Blue Flame Pro Based on Emmy Award Winning Platform
(Mount Marion, NY) September 10, 2001--Apple
Computer received the highest endorsement for their technology,
an Emmy from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Apple's Emmy is an engineering award for what is now
an industry standard, IEEE1394 Firewire which was developed
at Apple in the 1990's. Firewire is an advanced data
transport technology for connecting peripheral devices to computers.
In television production it is used to interface video equipment
to a computer and then shuttle video and audio clips and images
quickly and flawlessly back and forth. Firewire is an important
technology that allows professionals to edit programs on desktop
and notebook computers, eliminating very costly specialized
film and video editing equipment. Firewire has also been adopted
as a standard for high-definition television. Apple began
including Firewire on its Power Mac machines, computers
popular with graphics and entertainment production professionals,
in early 1999.
In the last year, desktop editing using Apple's hardware
and software has increasingly become the norm in the television
industry. "This seemed to be the year that the bloom was
on the rose," said John Leverence, Vice President of Awards
for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. "Firewire
is gaining serious momentum in the last year across our industry,"
said Jon Rubenstein, Senior Vice President for Hardware Engineering
of Apple. "It's part of our digital hub strategy,
and I think the gains and the recognition Firewire is getting
are further evidence that we're heading in the right direction."
"Firewire is now in tens of millions of devices, and it's
a real success story," said Richard Doherty, president
of Envisioneering, a consulting firm.
Laird Telemedia has a family of media converters that
include two bi-directional units, the LTM-5000 and the
LTM-5500, as well as a portable field unit, the LTM-FFP,

Laird Edit Router Delivers Efficiency to Media Operations
(Mount Marion, NY) August 29, 2001--Laird Telemedia
delivered LTM-ER4 Edit Routers to The Boeing Company
for use in their Avid Non-Linear Edit suites. In order to efficiently
manage and route digital and multiple format analog video and
audio media from multiple sources to and from their NLE systems
Boeing selected Laird. The Laird LTM-ER4 platform provides
routing solutions for all formats of video and RS-422 machine
control. Creative media personnel at Boeing now develop marketing
promotions and corporate communications without any concerns
for location or format of their media.
The Boeing Company is the largest aerospace company in the world,
with its heritage mirroring the history of aviation. It is the
world's largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military
aircraft, and the nation's largest NASA contractor. In terms
of sales, Boeing is the largest U.S. exporter. Boeing is a company
that is continually expanding its products and taking advantage
of new technologies - from creating new versions of its family
of commercial airplanes, to developing new aircraft for the
U.S. military, to building launch vehicles capable of lifting
more than 14 tons into orbit, to improving communications for
people around the world with an advanced network of satellites.
The Laird Telemedia LTM-ER4 Edit Router is a true multiformat
device. It routes component, composite, Y/C and balanced audio
as well as full RS-422 machine control. The direction control

NLE or a 4 x 1 router to download from an NLE. The LTM-ER4
ends the need for multiple patch bays, confusing cable clutter
and "what goes where" questions. Three optional add-ons
are available to further expand the functionality of the LTM-ER4,
a direct dubbing module, digital signal expander (FireWire,
SDI, SPDIF), and an NLE coupler which allows multiple NLEs to
share the same source and record decks.

BIG BEAR
PRODUCTIONS COMES TO LAIRD
Laird Edit Routers Specified For AVID Suite
(Mount Marion, NY) July 30, 2001--Laird Telemedia
was recently visited by Joseph Consentino, owner of Big Bear Films.
Joe witnessed first hand the design engineering and manufacturing
processes by which Laird products are made. Taking a break from
his production work, Joe enjoyed his stay at Laird Telemedia's
world headquarters and manufacturing center.
Impressed by the quality and workmanship of Laird products, as
well as the unique features which make them extremely versatile
tools for all production environments, Joe specified an LTM-ER4
Edit Router for his Avid editing suite at Big Bear Films.
"Family Values, The Mob & The Movies", a Big Bear
Films production which recently aired on TNT was produced and
directed by Joseph Consentino. This documentary which exposes
the myths and realities of the mob, received high praises from
The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter, and TV Guide.
The Laird Telemedia LTM-ER4 Edit Router is a true multi-format
device. It routes component, composite, Y/C and balanced audio
as well as full RS-422 machine control. The direction control
on the LTM-ER4 allows the editor to use four decks for
both sourcing and recording as a 1 x 4 router to upload to an
NLE or a 4 x 1 router to download from an NLE. The LTM-ER4
ends the need for multiple patch bays, confusing cable clutter
and "what goes where" questions.

MINDS.ORG TAKES DELIVERY OF LAIRD STREAM
CLEANER
& WEB MEDIA SPLITTERS
Laird Provides Real World Solutions for Distance Learning
(Mount Marion, NY) April 11, 2001--Laird Telemedia
recently delivered Stream Cleaners (LTM-STR4) and
media splitters (LTM-RS14A & LTM-RS14V) to MINDS.ORG
- one of the leaders in distance learning. MINDS.ORG is an Interactive
Learning Cooperative in which learners share and exchange information.
Members of the cooperative include educators, subject matter experts,
intermediate school districts, regional service centers, students
and parents. All share a similar vision for developing an interactive
learning model that integrates high-bandwidth connectivity and
multimedia content through collaboration. The result is the Multimedia
Instructional Network Delivery.
Laird Stream Cleaners installed by MINDS.ORG strip out
residual noise and hum from audio and video signals prior to encoding.
Laird multichannel media splitters deliver media to multiple servers
with multiple browser requirements.
Laird Telemedia has pioneered the concept of "The Web Head-End
for Broadcasters" by developing technology to bridge the
broadcaster to the server. The organized rack mount components
designed by Laird reduce the redundancy of splitters, EQ's, D.A.s,
noise reducers and extreme cable confusion.
Laird Telemedia has worked with many large scale webcasters to
design rack mount components that fit within a traditional budget
and yield big results.

ABCNEWS.COM STREAMS EVERY VIDEO &
AUDIO CLIP WITH LAIRD
Laird Creates a Broadcaster's Head-End for Webcasting !
(Mount Marion, NY) April 12, 2001--Laird Telemedia
has provided ABCNEWS.COM with 14 channel audio and video media
splitters designed to deliver high quality audio and video to
the ABCNEWS.COM streaming servers. Every time a user requests
an image from ABCNEWS.COM, the media is traveling through a Laird
product.
The Laird media splitters configured by Virage for ABC feature
twin outputs on each of the 14 channels. Twin outputs deliver
the same media to two different servers --one each for Real Player
and one for Windows Media Player. The twin output concept from
Laird is available as splitters, routers and audio preprocessors.
Traditional broadcasters embrace the Laird concept because of
the logical rack mounted organization these products deliver to
the usually disorganized array of cables, EQ's, DAs and PC's the
large scale webcaster is confronted with. Redundancy of equipment
is further eliminated by Laird's concept of multi-channel web
pre-processor components in compact 19" rack components.
Laird Telemedia has a full line of web head end products including
the LTM-RS14A and LTM-RS14V to deliver traditional
broadcasting signals to the streaming computer --regardless of
type or brand. These products are categorized by Laird as "Streaming
Media Pre-processing Solutions from Laird."

LAIRD TELEMEDIA INTRODUCES ER-4 MULTI-FORMAT EDIT ROUTER
Editors will now save time and money when digitizing and recording
(Mount Marion, NY) January 4th 2001--Laird Telemedia is
launching an all new edit router designed to simplify the lives
of all professional AVID, Media 100 and G4 based nonlinear editors.
The Laird LTM-ER4 Edit Router automates the upload and
download of audio, video and RS422 control feeds into any NLE
with the push of a single button. "When I have a lot of different
sources going into one nonlinear edit system, I find Laird edit
routers extremely useful," said James Peebles, Senior
Production Engineer at Oxygen Media.
The LTM-ER4 ends the need for multiple patch bays, confusing
cable clutter and "what goes where" questions. Patch
bays are a thing of the past and we avoid them like the plague,"
Peebles added.
The Laird LTM-ER4 Edit Router is a true multi-format device.
It can route component, composite, Y/C and balanced audio with
full machine control. The direction control on the LTM-ER4
allows the editor to use four decks for both sourcing and recording
as a 1 x 4 router to upload or a 4 x 1 router to download. "I
like the Laird router because it keeps things simple for my editors,"
said Peebles.
Three optional add-ons are available to further expand the functionality
of the LTM-ER4. A direct dubbing module, digital signal
expander (Firewire, SDI, SPDIF), and NLE coupler allow multiple
NLEs to share the same source and record decks.
Laird edit routers are made in the USA, CE approved, NTSC and
PAL compatible and contained in a 2RU cabinet. Laird provides
a three-year warranty and industry leading customer support. Visit

LAIRD TELEMEDIA WINS PRAISE BY THE TRENDS
RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION
Speech Names Laird The Cisco Systems of Broadcasting
Mount Marion, NY --January 10, 2000 ---Listed below are
excerpts from a speech given in the UK by Gerald Celente called
Technology Trends 2000. Mr. Celente is the executive director
of the Trends Research Institute and best selling author of the
book Trends 2000. He is often quoted in the Wall Street Journal,
Time, Fortune, People magazines and a frequent guest on Oprah
Winfrey and CNN.
........Ciscos main product line consists of routers that
sort streams of information packets that speed throughout the
Internet. Routers are indispensable traffic cops for
the digital revolution. As the Internet has grown, so to have
the demands for more sophisticated and task specific routers.
With higher bandwidth requirements and Internet traffic doubling
every 100 days.....companies like Cisco can only grow.
Laird Telemedia is another American company to watch.... in the
high end of the broadcasting industry with their line of industry
specific routers for the digital video world. Lairds equipment
combines previously incompatible video formats (component, composite
and YC) in a single instrument that can switch and route any of
these formats along with audio and data signals................This
is unique as before a broadcaster would need a video or audio
format specific router. Innovative router companies like Laird
are the Cisco of smaller, yet technically critical industries
like broadcasting -- Gerald Celente / Technology Trends 2000.

Mount Marion, NY --February 23, 2000 ---Laird Telemedia
announced today the delivery of an all new line of distribution
amplifiers and multi-format switchers with the added capability
of converting the respective ins and outs to the popular digital
video format of IEEE1394. Apple Computer, Inc. calls this format

or embracing some level of DV interfacing and adding DV to industry
standard routers and DAs gives the professional this innovative
interface option. Even if they dont use it now, they will
use it later.
Laird will supply DV ready units as 4x4, 4x1, 1x4 routers and
1x20 and 1x10 distribution amplifiers to start with and more units
